In the Realm of the Sense
Everyday Exchanges: Marketwork and Capitalist Common Sense by Evan Watkins, This strikingly original work challenges a familiar assumption within cultural studies: that cultural practices happen in an everyday realm that is potentially open-ended, involving everyone; whereas economics, by contrast, is alien, a force field determined by international financial interests and legitimized by the arid discourses of professional economists. The author argues that, in fact, for most people, most of the time, economic issues are a central part of everyday life. Separating economics from everyday practices has resulted in seemingly interminable debates over the relative importance of economic conditions and cultural factors in determining the "real" configurations of power relations; it has also reinforced the perception that the capitalist marketplace, now global, permits no alternatives. The author shows instead that a kind of economic sense-making is at work, a "common sense" that conditions a great deal about how many people organize their lives and understand their powers as social agents. "Common sense", Gramsci recognized, is always equivocal, multiform, even contradictory, and economic sensemaking is no exception. Thus the author pays special attention to conflicting currents of economic sense-making and their social effects, thereby showing how false the assumption of a monolithic and uniform Market actually is. He looks at a wide range of economic practices and assumptions, from transnational corporations and human resources management in the university, to the organization of such very specific markets as the breeding and sale of show dogs. But Gramsci also understood that, no matter how equivocal and conflicted, common sense imposes parameters ofpossibility. No political direction is likely to be realized if it is not in some way deeply engaged in mobilizing some aspect of everyday common sense.
The Realm of Secondhand Souls by Sandra Shea, X The realm of secondhand souls is a place where antique fabrics hold the secrets of their former owners, where found objects uncover lost worlds, and where a uniquely gifted young woman who has lost nearly everything finally finds herself. In her mesmerizing first novel, Sandra Shea recounts the life of Novena, born on a hot summer night surrounded by a circle of aunts, who offer the protection of their unfettered love. But when Novena is orphaned and sent to live with her aunt Elegia and four boy cousins, she retreats from their boisterous clamor into the realm of her imagination. It provides safe haven for years -- until she is forced back into the world by a tragic disappearance connected to her cousin Zan, torturer of all creatures smaller than himself. Blaming herself for the tragedy, Novena escapes to live with her great-aunt Annaluna, who is besieged by demons of her own, including the ones that reside in the hundreds of shoes that fill her apartment. It is only when Novena stumbles into a vintage clothing store called God of Sand that she begins to recognize her special gifts of insight. In the tattered folds of yesterday's suits and chemises, she can sense the hidden histories and memories that help her stitch her life back together. The setting for THE REALM OF SECONDHAND SOULS is unmistakably contemporary, yet time and place remain deliberately filmy, beautifully illustrating the vaporous, murky boundaries between our dreams and our memories, between the seen and the unseen, and between past and present in a modern world where nostalgia is paramount. Sandra Shea's magical novel is a story of how our families possess us and how our possessions become our family. Enter thismysterious and unforgettable realm, and you will never want to leave.
Dialectical monism - ... which holds that reality is ultimately a unified whole, distinguishing itself from monism by asserting that this whole necessarily expresses itself in dualistic terms. For the dialectical monist, the essential unity is that of complementary polarities which, while opposed in the realm of experience and perception, are co-substantial in a transcendent sense. Demon realm - Demon realm can refer to either Asura realm or Hell realm of Buddhist Samsara belief. Positive-sense RNA - Unlike negative-sense RNA, positive-sense RNA is of the same sense as mRNA. On Sense and the Sensible - On Sense and the Sensible (or "On sense and what is sensed", or "On sense perception", or "De Sensu et Sensibilibus") is a text by Aristotle, written about 350 B.C.
